Name: Sam Winchester.
Canon: Supernatural.
Original or Alternate Universe: Original.
Canon Point: 3x16; No Rest for the Wicked; pre-Lazarus Rising. Established partnership with Ruby & enhanced powers.
Number: 006
Setting: Monsters are real.
History:
First of all, Sam Winchester's life pretty much sucks.
Remember the date: November 2, 1983, this day became the downward spiral for the Winchesters. There was night visit from the demon known as Azazel, later found out to be feeding demon blood to the sixth month year-old Sam. This resulted in the death of his mother, Mary Winchester, and the house fire setting aflame to his father’s life-long goal—find the demon and kill the bastard.Well, years bustling through the demon hunting lifestyle eventually became too much for Sam to handle. He saw alternatives and one explosive argument with his father led to his decision: He will go to Stanford University and become a lawyer. He’s got a beautiful girlfriend named Jess and all is well. That’s the normal life, isn’t it?
It wasn’t long until the demon-hunting life started hunting back. Dean popped in for a surprise visit and there was strange news… their father was missing. ( “You're not hearing me, Sammy. Dad's missing. I need you to help me find him,” 1.01 ) Thus, our painful adventure begins. Although Sam is reluctant to actually join his brother on finding their father, it’s Jessica’s death that encourages him in the end. Parallel to the death of his mother, Sam follows the obsession to kill the demon responsible for her death.
Of course being number one with ‘hey, I’m going to do my own thing and not tell anyone else shit,’ John Winchester is difficult to track down. The boys take in every lead they can possibly find while taking down some major terrors walking the Earth: wendigos, vengeful spirits, Bloody Mary, shape shifters; you name it. It’s throughout the numerous adventures that Sam begins to experience visions, excused as nightmares until they are involved in cases, one in particular being the episode Home ( “I have these nightmares. … And sometimes... they come true.” )
They find themselves deep in cases as the tension between Sam and his father becomes more obvious, eventually receiving a call that only gives them directions and no answers. Dean’s loyalty is questioned by Sam and all goes shit crazy in the family, but they move on. Family is a strong weakness to the Winchesters that we see as the series goes on, one episode in particular being Dean’s death in Faith. It’s just the start of deaths and rising for the dead, the Winchesters will keep kicking. Then Sam’s ‘nightmares’ start to become part of the big picture—we see the lines connect in Nightmare as Sam realizes there are similarities to other people, bearing with powers just like him. The connection is slowly drawn between the death of his mother and himself, these nightmares that become reality.
Eventually we are reintroduced to an old acquaintance of Sam’s when he wasn’t feeling too hot with Dean, Meg Masters who turns out to be a demon and working under Azazel. The danger with their father is revealed and the final showdown is upon us.
At least for the first season.
This is when the Colt becomes a part of their lives, the rumored weapon that can kill absolutely ANYTHING—even the demon that killed their mother and Jess. Of course that becomes a problem for the demon, being tracked down by Meg who simply kills in hope of a trade. Attempting to trick the demon, he meets her with a fake and is captured. The boys go to a family friend known as Bobby Singer for help and Meg goes after them. It’s her grave mistake as she captured in a Devil’s Trap upon arrival. She’s exorcised and the real Meg Masters gives a clue on their father’s whereabouts before death.
This is where things go downhill ( more downhill than usual, anyways ). Finding their father, they find him possessed by Azazel. There is a long and terrible struggle until John gains momentary control, telling Sam to shoot him with the Colt.
Sam is unable to shoot his father and Azazel gets away.
Oh, and they get into a terrible car accident by a possessed truck driver. Just the cherry on top.
Starting with season two, we find out they are all fine except Dean, who is in a coma ( we eventually become used to terrible things happening to Dean ). In the end, John Winchester makes a deal with Azazel to save his son with the Colt in the bonus package. There’s a heavy atmosphere between Dean and Sam as they avoid the topic of their father, so they continue hunting and possibly tracking down Azazel once again.
Sam’s visions only become stronger at this point and they are able to connect other gifted child. Just when there’s a pattern, it falters. We eventually learn of more troubles such as John’s final order to Dean: save Sam, but kill him if you can’t.
Then all Hell breaks loose, literally. Sam is abducted and Azazel’s grand plan begins to unravel. It turns out Sam is one of the many children with the burden of a gift, placed into an elaborate game to kill one another until there’s only one left. The chaos of distrust amongst one another eventually leads to Sam’s death. Desperate, Dean summons a Crossroads and exchanges his soul for Sam’s life, which will be taken in exactly one year. They continue on their hunt as weird it is for Sam, tracking down Jake who manipulates the situation into opening… well crap, the Devil’s Gate. Demons are released onto the Earth and Azazel finally makes his move. All seems to fail until the spirit of John Winchester helps the boys into finally shooting the demon with the Colt. The Devil’s Gate is closed, but there are a lot of demons waiting to be hunted.
Then we’ve got season 3 focusing on Dean’s deal. Sam is focused on finding a way out of it while Dean doesn’t seem to put in his best effort. There is a long inner struggle with Dean about his guilt and self-pity, even trying to prepare Sam for the war with the demons all on his own.
And we are introduced with Ruby, a demon turning sides as she helps the Winchester boys time after time, eventually gaining a trust with Sam, but not Dean. A demon is a demon and Dean won’t take that shit. The Colt is fixed by her and she exchanges her need to help Sam against Lilith, a powerful demon leading the army unreleased upon the Earth.
It’s a long and hurtful season as we see Sam transform into something not as kind, leaving Dean with a layer of concern if it’s truly the same Sam that came back to life.
Attempt after attempt, Dean finds himself on his final few hours. Their last minute attempt to track down Lilith is a major failure when Ruby’s body is overtaken by the powerful demon. Dean’s time is up and Lilith sends the Hellhounds after Dean, a broken Sam watching his brother torn to bits and killed.
Personality:
If we’re working out who is Starsky and who is Hutch, well, maybe Hutch. It would be a long, long conversation between the Winchesters before we could actually decide, so let’s stick to the basics—Sam Winchester is smart. He’s definitely the working brain of the two and knows how to do his research. He’s the man behind the laptop and actually makes wise chooses ( usually… ), possibly called prissy by the junk-food eating Dean. He loves order in his life despite how that never works out, but he tries. God, does he try.But Sam is kind; he knows and feels compassion for others. He can be quite sensitive such as his relationship with his father and his inner troubles about Azazel feeding him demon blood, but a good part of that changes as he is revived at Dean’s deal. A part of him hardens ( now, don’t be nasty ) and he’s much quicker with his decision to kill people. But Sam is still there and he knows how to think what is wrong and what is right. Most of the time. Winchesters aren’t good about continuity unless it’s dying. He doesn't want to be the freak and he doesn't want to be told what to do, he wants to be independent. He can be an incredibly stubborn man, just as he struggles to save Dean to the very end. He even stays near his grave site long after death, bitter and still hopeful. The world can keep kicking and Sam Winchester will keep scrambling back onto his feet.
That’s when we started to see violence steer our young Sam Winchester away. We are given many examples how his anger controls his emotions, being his decision to leave for college and obsession to avenge everyone from Lilith’s wrath. It usually takes a few slaps to steady his head, but he admits to it at times. It’s a large fault of his he hasn’t worked on; he just prefers getting stuff done.
Other than that, Sam tries to act out as someone who simply wants a normal life. From the very beginning he tried to find his way back, but the demon-hunting life always tugs harder. He eventually gives into his life as a ‘freak,’ uncertain with himself and how deep he has gotten into his troubles. Despite it all, he’s not a miserable person. He won’t let his inner pains become more than a pained expression, quietly keeping them to himself as Winchesters do... at least until it builds up and explodes. Sam definitely knows how to whine about his problems. He enjoys friends and all the good things, but he knows at this point something will always go wrong despite his faith. He can and laugh and enjoy the moment, but he’s always thinking ahead. It’s a sad life.
An important part to Sam’s personality is his relationship with his brother. From their early ages to the present, it’s obvious he looks up to Dean. The vulnerability is their genuine love as brothers, sacrificing themselves time after time just to keep the other safe. As his reaction after Dean is taken by the Hellhounds, he’s somewhat crippled without his brother. They do fight and argue, but Sam Winchester is not much without Dean Winchester. He will usually talk about his brother in a… let’s say ‘okay’ sort of way, not approving of his habits, but he really does prefer his brother by his side. Despite all of the ‘really, Dean?’ and infinite sass faces, that’s how he truthfully feels.
Now, despite the whole phrase 'bros before hoes,' it's a difficult point at Sam's current stage. His relationship with his brother may be close, but we see at Dean's return that Sam has gotten much closer with Ruby. They kill demons and that's it—definitely Dean's train of thought. So, you can imagine his intense displeasure whenever Ruby comes into the picture, questioning Sam from time to time when he actually sides with her. Ruby and Sam work the job together post Dean-death and it's Sam's way to fill in that gap, in a way. Trust has come to Ruby at the point she saved his life, his lowest point in desperation and even starting a sexual relationship. Ruby has done nothing more than help, so he eventually gives into being allies.
This is where 'bros before hoes' totally gets twisted, beginning his stage of lying to Dean and dampening his trust. Despite how he's been honest with himself in the previous seasons, Sam is at a point he is unwilling to be out and truthful with Dean. Unfortunately as the series goes on, this leads to Dean's distrust in return, quite contradictory how he doesn't want be treated any differently. It's not that he doesn't want to tell him the full out truth, he really does, but it's something he avoids and works on approaching at some point. It's dragged out too long and Dean eventually does find out, regretful and very apologetic for what he is done.
Unfortunately ( I'll never get tired of saying that ), his current canon point hasn't reached this point of honesty. Especially with their different points, Sam will struggle to vomit out the truth, as much as it spoils it even more. It's taking bad news and layering it with more bad frosting.Note: Knowing that he is unable to establish long-term relationships with his previous job, a closed setting will definitely be different for Sam. It will be a form of a normal life, except not. He will laugh, he will joke, he will cry like a bitch. He will always be on edge about their situation and preparation for Lilith. After all, the Winchester life doesn’t stay happy for long.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
→ Check out that noggin:As previously established, Sam is one smart cookie. He didn’t go to Harvard for nothing—he’s resourceful and knows how find out what he needs. He’s the researcher for each case the Winchesters stumble upon, mentioning notable details and precautions they should take. Give something to mess with and Sam will eventually crack it, technology or a physical lock to a door. Hell, the man is an encyclopedia.
→ No worries, it’s just rock salt:
Much like his brother, he can hunt. Their early days as hunters prepared Sam for all of the troubles upon his return, skilled with closed range weapons and of course, rock salt. Gets rid of all the nasties and prepares Sam Winchester for another day of doing the exact same thing. Good times.
→ His hair grows the more emotional he gets:
Sam Winchester is definitely one emotional dude, stumbling on his anger and sadness into bad decisions. It usually becomes a huge mess with his brother, especially with keeping secrets, but Sam does his best to fix up the damage. He’s emotional and he knows it, but that keeps him human. We’ve seen this with his father-son relationship, exhibiting huge daddy problems and a lack of closure for a lot of things.
→ His head might start spinning in a matter of time:
He’s started to embrace the inner freak when he started drinking demon blood from Ruby. It’s strengthened him to the point of exorcising demons simply from his mind. We then see enhancement to Sam’s body and mind, but not quite as strong due to his canon point.
•Mind exorcism: Forcing the demon to leave their body and return to their home, Hell, of course. The demon usually leaves the body in a cloud of black smoke and the host is unharmed, regaining control of themselves. That is unless the body is fatally harmed, then there is nothing Sam can do. This ability usually gives him massive headaches and nose bleeds, but it's a work in progress.
•Immunity to other demonic creatures: Sam is attacked by demon beams and pew pew-lights at various points in the series, one significant example being Lilith's attack that manifests a blinding light. He is completely unharmed, as they vary. He's basically like Superman, but Demon Blood Man, which is nothing to be proud of. (Ex. immune to mind control; Croatoan Virus.) Although it proves that this ability is only strengthened by his intake of demon blood, as he slowly strengthens in season four. So, we can say he's at a much lower point with this ability, as the others.
•Telekinesis: As mentioned before, this is an ability that isn't as enhanced due to his canon point, but it was one that be strengthened as he feeds on Ruby's blood or other demon blood. The ability focuses on the mind, from moving an object across the room or pinning someone to a wall without moving an inch.→ He’s Dean and he’s my idiot of a brother:
Could we emphasize family as a weakness any more than we have? Dean is a major weakness to Sam as Sam is to him. They have gone through a long history of sacrificing each other. Get to Dean and you get to Sam, that’s how the formula works out in the end.
